Why Band?
Many parents ask us why we do this. Being in the band program can be demanding for both students and their families. Almost all of us started out just trying to support our children and keep up with a new school activity. Along the way, many of us discover that being "in the Band" is a unique, life-changing experience.
Being in a successful band program requires discipline, knowledge, study, hard work and physicality. The Brunswick Bands have a long history of being one of the best programs in the state, and our Band Parent Organization is a critical part of that success.
Embracing Self-Improvement...
Band staff focus on helping students improve themselves. While bands test themselves at various competitions along the way, students are primarily focused on the journey of self-improvement through each season.
Promoting Academic Success...
The study of music is a pursuit of art and knowledge; and as such, it promotes academic achievement through the opportunity to constantly learn.
Being Part of a Team...
Being in a band and embracing the path to excellence means learning to endure hardship with those in your section and sacrificing for your team. These relationships are the positive, life-affirming experiences that shape one's future.
Striving for Greatness and Achieving Excellence...
Along the way, students often have their first real chance to experience greatness that comes from practicing excellence. There are few more rewarding moments of victory for both students and parents when a season is successfully completed with a superior rating at OMEA State finals.
We Make this Experience Possible...
In the BBPO, we have the purposeful opportunity to join these students on their journey by supporting them along the way. While we may not be performing with them, we are a critical part of making this all possible.
Testimonials from our members...
"Fifth grade band is when my son found his people. Then in eighth grade, he found his passion when he joined the Marching Band. His enthusiasm was so contagious our entire family got involved. His younger sister couldn't wait to join the band and is now a sophomore. My son has now moved on to march at Ohio University. I am on the executive board and my husband volunteers so we can be part of the band family too. Through the band, my kids have made friendships and memories that will last a lifetime, while learning music, leadership skills, and teamwork."
"Our daughter started playing the sax in 5th grade. In 8th grade, she joined the marching band and found her home. Our son joined the band in 6th grade and while we haven't yet convinced him to march, he loves both concert and jazz band. Both kids play multiple instruments and have gained self-confidence and leadership skills. Band gave them a built-in support group and lifelong friends. As we got involved in the BBPO we also found a home and lifelong friends. Our band is truly a family for both students and parents no matter what way you are involved!"
"Our son came to us one day in seventh grade and asked to tryout for The Marching Band’s eighth grade leadership program. His mother had been in the band for one season, but we didn’t really know what to expect. However, we were warmly welcomed into the band family and ended up joining the Exec Board.
It’s been an incredibly rewarding experience so far. We are extremely proud of our son for what he’s put on the field and he now has goals to pursue music education upon graduation."
"The band program changed my daughter's life. She found her people and integrated into the Low Brass tribe right away. She loved being in the marching band and we followed. We volunteered however we could so that we could share the experience with her."
"We had so many amazing moments - London was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Seeing my daughter and her bandmates marching through Trafalgar Square on New Year's Day with literally millions of people cheering was truly a special experience."
